Cruises are a great value, as vacations go. There is so much that you
get for the price you pay that if you consider everything, they almost
always come out to be the least expensive way to enjoy a spectacular
vacation. Most cruise lines offer unending fabulous food, fantastic
live shows, use of the fitness center, onboard educational classes,
movies, kids clubs, sports courts, and more in addition to outstanding
accommodations and superb service, all included in the base cruise
fare.

I recently met the Cleveland Plain Dealer's own Terry Pluto at the
opening of the Cleveland Gladiator's first arena football league game.
Terry writes one of my favorite weekly columns for the Sunday Plain
Dealer. The column contains a variety of insider's notes of the Cavs,
Browns, and Indians that you don't get anywhere else. If you have ever
read them, you know that Terry is well connected in the Cleveland
sports scene. He is also a renowned author of 23 books such as Loose
Balls, which was ranked 13th on the Sports Illustrated list of the top
100 sports books of all time. He has been nominated twice for a
Pulitzer Prize and has twice been selected by the Associated Press
Sports Editors as the nation's top sports columnist for medium-sized
newspapers.

"Hey, What's that White Stuff?" |
|
|
|
|
Friday, 14 March 2008 |
Once people find out that I am the environmental consultant for Huron
Lime, they invariably want to know "what's that white smoke?" My
response is "what white smoke?"
Of course they are referring to the white steam plume that is generated
when limestone is heated to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit to separate the
lime (calcium oxide - CaO) from the limestone (calcium carbonate --
CaCO3) releasing carbon dioxide, water (steam) and some lime dust. As
much as the company would like to be able to recover 100 percent of the
lime produced, it is not yet technically feasible.
"But isn't that lime dust harmful?" I can answer this question thanks
to my educational background in Environmental Health and more than a
decade of working for the Ohio EPA. But first a little regulatory
history, if I may.
