Monday evening, over 50 players, parents, and friends gathered to help kick off the 2008 Huron High School boy's baseball season. Munching cookies while seated within the high school cafeteria, Huron neighbors exchanged tidbits of the past winter and shared optimism for the Tiger's coming baseball season.
Head coach Tom Kowaleski introduced assistant varsity coach Tom Bollenbacher, JV head coach Jeff Volz, and JV assistant coaches Chet Estel and Joe Anthony, praising them for their support and dedication to the Huron baseball program.
During the team presentations, coach "K", ("Tiger talk" for Tom Kowaleski) challenged the returning seniors, Derek Delamatre, Kevin Howard, and Vince Zappa, to show leadership and use their experience to assist the younger teammates through the coming season. The Tigers face a tough schedule and teamwork will be critical for success.
Spring is a soggy season for sports in Northern Ohio. Earlier in the evening, the coaches had inspected the Fabens Park ball fields and found them less than favorable. Because of the recent heavy rains and the ground's saturated condition, rescheduling or relocation of future games may be necessary. Coaches and school administrators advised that team members, parents, and fans frequently check the school's web site www.huronhs.com for schedule adjustments and game cancellations.
Huron High School's vice principal and athletic director, Tony Munafo, closed the evening's festivities by delivering the state of Ohio's mandated briefing on the rules of player eligibility and the ideals of good sportsmanship. He personally charged the team members, fans, and parents to act and behave in a manner that will reflect honorably upon themselves, Huron, and Huron High School.
Tiger baseball begins.
