Wednesday, 09 April 2008
To mark the 10th anniversary of the Lighthouse Half Marathon and 5K Run, the Huron Chamber of Commerce is planning a party -- a beach party without the sand and sunscreen.
Since it's a milestone year for the race, set for Saturday, May 3, the Chamber asking Huron residents to turn out along the course to cheer on the runners.
Runners have come to look forward to this race with its scenic course along the lakeshore and down to the beach at Nickel Plate Park. However, these runners from across Ohio and several nearby states, say that in most towns the residents turn out cheer them on and make them feel welcome. Crowds at the Huron race have been pretty sparse down through the years.
The Chamber is sponsoring an informal contest that will give residents a chance to compete for prizes and bragging rights. Local clubs, neighborhood groups, and families will be judged on most original decorations and largest contingency to turn out. Theme for the event is "A Run At The Beach."
"We'd love to see lots of Huron folks lining the course this year, cheering on the runners and making them feel welcome here in Huron," said Sheila Ehrhardt, Chamber director. "Even if you choose to only wear your 'comfy Saturday duds' please come out and watch the action," she added.
The race starts at the Huron High School Memorial Stadium and continues on Cleveland Road East, to Ohio 61, back through Nickel Place Park and Cleveland Road, north on Center Street to Cleveland Road West and continuing to Lake Erie Parkway. Details on the contest and a detailed course map can be obtained at the Chamber office, 509 Huron St.
Proceeds are used to provide scholarships to graduating members of the Huron High School (HHS) track team.
