Wine fans should be sure to check out this year's Catawba Island Boat Show, the fourth annual show to be held at the picturesque Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton, Ohio. Vineyards from across the northern region of the state will offer samples during a wine tasting on Saturday, May 3.
The show runs May 2-4 and will feature an array of power and sail boats displayed in the water and on land all weekend. Admission and parking are free. The wine tasting will be held through a partnership with the Ohio Wine Producers Association, a group of vineyards, wineries and associates that promote the growing industry in the state. Wine sample sales will help fund marine college scholarships.
"The collection of boats and beautiful location made it a great show in the past," said Show Manager Ken Alvey, "but the wine tasting this year will really add to the fun."
The event serves the Lake Erie islands area of Ottawa and Erie counties that has the highest number of boats per capita and greatest density of boats per acre of water in the entire Great Lakes Basin. Boating household expenditures in Ottawa and Erie counties are eight to ten times greater than the state average.
"Boating is big here and so is wine production," said Alvey. "Bringing the two together will hopefully benefit the entire region. The boat dealers and vineyards get to meet people face-to-face and the visitors get to take it all in for free."
The boats will be docked in the Catawba Island Club Marina slips, allowing easy access to Lake Erie for customer test-drives. Sponsored by Toyota Trucks, the show hours are: Friday, May 2, Noon - 6 p.m.; Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Wine tasting all day); And Sunday, May 4, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
On Friday, May 2, the Inter-Lake Yachting Association will sell $15 margarita and appetizer tickets to benefit its junior sailing program.
