"We're having a party, a citywide beach party, without the sunscreen and sand," said Sheila Ehrhardt, director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce.
Huronites and Erie County residents are urged to turn out on Saturday, May 3 to cheer on several hundred runners from across Ohio and nearby states, participating in the 10th annual Lighthouse Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk.
As an added incentive, the Chamber is sponsoring a contest that will give clubs, neighborhood groups and families a chance to compete for prizes and bragging rights. "A Run at the Beach," is the theme for a contest that will recognize the largest group along the race route who are decked out in "Jimmy Buffet-style duds, and the group with the most original outfits. Prizes will be awarded in each category. Phone the Chamber office, 419-433-5700 to sign up for the contest.
For the fit and fearless, registrations will be accepted from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on race day at the Huron High School Memorial Stadium locker rooms. Runners have come to look forward to this race with its scenic route along the lake and down to Nickel Plate Park beach.
Starter for this year's race will be Emily Ineson, granddaughter of well-known Huronite Ron Ineson who passed away recently after a valiant battle with leukemia. Ron was a longtime Chamber volunteer, and gave of a great deal of his time to other organizations, as well. Emily, 13, is a member of the Huron Junior High track team, where she specialized in the 100-meter race.
The race starts on the track at the stadium with runners heading east on Jim Campbell Blvd. The half-marathoners will continue east on Cleveland Road, out to Ohio 61 and back to Nickel Plate Park and west to Center St. There they will join up with the 5K runners and proceed north to Cleveland Road W. Those participating in the 5K will proceed west on Cleveland Road W. to Drive Blvd. and turn back on Cleveland Road to return to the stadium. The half marathoners will continue west to Lake Erie Parkway and then south to the footpath behind Woodlands School and back to the stadium.
As part of the race's 10th anniversary observance, awards will be given to the fastest man and woman from Huron and the top man and woman from Erie County. Proceeds from this event are used to provide scholarships to graduating members of the Huron High School track team.
The Half Marathon will start at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 8:15 a.m. Race-day registration is $25 for the Half Marathon and $15 for the 5K Run. Huron chiropractor, Dr. John Heilman will distribute wellness and anti-aging information to the runners and students in the massage therapy program at EHOVE Ghrist Adult Career Center will do post-race chair massages for the weary runners. Many Huron businesses have donated a wide array of door prizes for the event.
Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishers and to the top three in each age division. Age groups include: 13 and under, and 14-19, (5K only) 19 and under, (half marathon only) 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 and over.
