The Huron High School Concert Band earned a Superior Rating (I) in the Ohio Music Education Association State Band & Choir Contest, May 2, in Findlay, Ohio.
Last Friday, Director Ryan Smith and the 66 members of the concert band performed before the OMEA three prepared musical selections: Free World March by Karl King, Sea of Tranquility by David Schaeffer, and Sparks by Brian Balmages.
Following their prepared performances, the band was given a fourth selection by the OMEA panel to "sight read" and perform with only three minutes of preparation time. Based on these four performances the HHS Concert Band received their Superior rating.
"The band members were ecstatic after learning of their rating," Ryan Smith stated. Continuing, "The students have worked extremely hard since marching season ended, and have been improving their playing ability and sight reading skills."
The hard work and preparedness paid off. This was the first time in the history of the Huron High School Concert Band that a SUPERIOR Rating (I) was awarded to the school by the Ohio Music Education Association. "Words cannot express how happy I am for these sixty six members of the concert band and the overall Band Program at Huron High School. To watch our students improve and strive for the success at the highest is very gratifying as a teacher. For a school the size of Huron to be selected for State is an honor, and now, to obtain a Superior Rating is just outstanding. I commend these students for all of their time and effort put into this program and I am very proud of them," Mr. Smith happily announced.
