The Honorable John R. Kasich, former United States Congressman from Ohio, served as the keynote speaker at the 2008 Gala sponsored by the Erie County Republican Party and the Huron County Republican Women's Club.  The event was held on Saturday, May 10, at Mesenburg's Plaza Place in Huron. Over 150 people listened to Mr. Kasich as he spoke of his formative years growing up in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, learning from his parents to be self reliant and responsible. His family often traveled to Ohio (described by his uncle as the "promised land") to spend short vacations at Peck's Cottages in Vermilion.
The respect his Pennsylvania relatives had for the State of Ohio led Mr. Kasich to choose  The Ohio State University for his under graduate education.  The rest is history, as they say, because well before the end of his freshman year he was sitting in the Oval Office of the White House having a private meeting with President Nixon. According to Mr. Kasich, this meeting was a result of his mother's reaction whenever he complained that "something needed to be done". She would tell him to do something about it.
That attitude led him to win a Congressional election, and serve as the Chairman of the Congressional Budget Committee. In this capacity he took the lead to successfully create a balanced budget, pay down the national debt, and spearhead welfare reform, a feat for which the Clinton Administration constantly takes the credit. Mr. Kasich served 6 terms in Congress, always striving to hold down spending and taxes. Under his leadership, Congress had finally understood the notion that spending taxpayer money should be done carefully and for the good of the people instead of using it as payment in exchange for election votes. With this accomplished, he began a new career. He now works in the financial sector with a private investment group, and he is an analyst and commentator on Fox News Channel.
Disappointed that the fiscal reform of Congress was short lived, and concerned about Ohio's above-average unemployment, and rating as a high-tax, anti-business state, he stated that he is considering running for Governor of the State of Ohio. Mr. Kasich, a dynamic and inspirational speaker, delighted the crowd with this announcement.
