safari.jpgThe first through fourth graders at Woodlands Elementary school have been working hard all year.  The end of the school year is just a couple weeks away now.  In order to cap off Right to Read week, Mr. Rowe, the school's principal thought he had the perfect idea for a fieldtrip for his school. He thought it would be great to tie the trip in with the theme of the school's new mural of jungle creatures and take the children on safari with him to the wild grasslands of the Marblehead peninsula.  So on Friday morning, most of the school mounted upon the familiar yellow buses, but this time head out on an adventure to the African Safari Wildlife Park just outside of Port Clinton, OH.
Mr. Rowe, decked out in his finest safari gear, led the way.  The park has a nice program for students of any school who would choose this as a field trip.  They have over 50 species of animals through out the grounds which are divided into two sections.  One is a 100-acre open preserve subdivided into four sections. Our buses drove among many antelope and elk type of mammals including some American Bison with two new babies just born the previous week.  Many of the animals are not afraid to approach the vehicle, so keep everything inside!
The second section has the feel of a zoo, which the children walked through on their way to a very entertaining program put on by the staff of the Park.  There the kids were introduced to several creatures including Sidney, the performing Cockatoo from Australia.  The biggest "Ahhhhh..." was reserved for Finigan, the cute and shy Fennec Fox from the North African desert.  Another favorite was the massive, and shedding, Red Tail Boa Constrictor named Cleo.
Everyone had a fun and safe time on Safari with the soon retiring Mr. Rowe.  For more information on African Safari Wildlife Park, check out their website at www.africansafariwildlifepark.com.  They are located near Port Clinton at exit 124 off route 2.
